Hi - we are in an interesting predicament. Years ago we had Primestar satellite TV - when they got bought by DirecTV about 8 yrs ago, the DirecTV folks came out and replaced our dish and reciever. They left the cable from the dish into the house in place and re-used it.
We had an incident a couple weeks ago and the cable from the dish into the house ( about 100-150 ft) was broken. We put some alligator clips on the two ends and were back in business.....until it rained. Now we're TV-less .
Can we buy a replacement cable somewhere, and if so, what should we get? The cable we have says 'Primestar' on it. Is the modern RG-6 I'm reading about compatible with an old system like ours? The cable we have looks like two coax cables bonded together. Once it gets into the house, they separate and go through some type of connector (F connector perhaps?) - then they are bonded together again and go up to the receiver. One side plugs into the receiver, the other one just hangs there.
Then, the followup question - should we just scrap all the old equipment (that we own), and switch to Dish and get a whole new setup and a sweet deal, or salvage the system we have? I hear horror storied about dealing with customer service from both Dish and DirecTV, so I'm thinking the least hassle may be to stick with the status quo, fix what we have and not have to deal with them (I spent 45 min on hold with DirecTV just to see if they would do anything to help ut (they will give us a slightly reduced rate for a year to keep us from going to Dish)) Thoughts? Thanks!
