The search box comes up on the left side as it should but the box is empty
and all you see is the dog. What happened to the interface. This occurred
after having a virus cleaned from the computer. Also lost a sku011.cab file
which has been restored but has not corrected this problem only the Excel
problem.

The problem you are describing sounds similar to this KB article
"Several dialog boxes are blank"
http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] -us;831430

Also -- this may or may not be related, as it doesn't specify that the
search box is blank, however the steps for reinstalling search companing
files are listed here:
http://support.microsoft.com/defau [...] 0121120120

Hope this helps.
