How do you ensure that you end up with a monitor with no dead or stuck pixels? Are there online retailers that will take the monitor back if it has dead or stuck pixels? Are there any physical retailers that will allow you to test a display for dead or stuck pixels before buying? How do you avoid this issue?

No online store will take back a monitor with only 1 dead or stuck pixel. I heard of a few e-tailers that offers zero defect policy, but it costs extra. Dell.com offers a 21 day satisfaction guarantee, but it is ususally limited to only Dell monitors.

Retail stores will allow you to exchange / return merchandise within a certain time period. And if you ask nicely they may even let you test the monitor before you leave the store.

All i can say is stay away from LG.
up to 19" you can take it back with one dead pixel within a week, or 20"+ you need at least 6 dead pixels before you can take it back (ie, 5 dead pixels and you have to live with it).

As for online stores, better check their policies before buying. You may be able to take it straight to the manufacturer, check their individual policies too before buying.

I know one place here in Canada that will take back your monitor "no questions asked." So if you get one with dead pixels you just take it back. Memory Express -- they have retail shops in Calgary and Edmonton, but also a good online shop. Not sure if they ship outside Canada though.
