More Information

I play everquest regularly at College, but I have a ping of around 4k!!!

Well I noticed one day while going through web pages that things went WAY faster when I was downloading in the background. So I started to download a large file and then started up everquest and wouldn't you know, my ping was at a reasonable 280! After an hour of playing my ping jumped back up into the thousands so I quit and found that the download was done.

What the heck is this??? My connection is BETTER when I am downloading something??? Is there some way to fix this such as a program in the background that constantly uses the net? Please help me out! ~thanks

I should also add that I run windows 98 and the college bookstore installed the ethernet card for me.
