I'm considering purchasing a Viewsonic VG2230wm as seen at the following link:

My concern about the monitor is that it is only a 6-bit panel. Presently I have a 19" Viewsonic LCD "gaming" monitor that is also a 6-bit panel. I tend to do some occasional photo editing/graphics work, and the dithering has always been fairly tolerable. In most desktop applications the color difference isn't even an issue.

I have, however, noticed that the dithering in some 3d games produces a very annoying effect. The best comparison I could make is that it's vaguely similar to looking through a fine mesh screen (like certain thin fabrics or if you shrunk down a window screen). It mostly seems to happen when there is a lack of contrast, especially in dark environments. Either this or something else about the dithering makes the edges of objects significantly less distinct and gives everything a sort of "foggy" effect at times.

I just wanted to see if anyone else has experienced this and has any comments about it. I'd like to know anything I can about this problem before I buy a second LCD, and I've never really seen anyone else mention it. As much as I'd love to buy a full 8-bit panel, I'm really having to stretch my budget as it is to manage $300 for this one (plus the $350 GPU I'm buying to support it at native resolutions).
