I know this is a few decades late to ask but I really need to know?

Fact was that VHS picture resolution was inferior to Betamax, thats why loads of Betamax cameras were used in the media industries.

This never made sense to me...

Now recently BlueRay has triumphed over HD, howcome?

First is recording space, second which most people know is Adult Films. By the time betamax manage to increase the recording length it was too late.

Betamax picture quality was better technically, but tape transport was the other way. In high-speed forward and reverse movement, a VHS tape is pulled away from the rotating head, but not in a Betamax machine. The result is greater head and tape wear for Betamax if you're doing a lot of Fast Forward or Rewinding. For home consumers this is more important than for broadcast users (who simply buy more new tapes and limit their re-use of older ones), whereas broadcasters value higher signal quality. Home users often use SLP speed on VHS to get 6 hours on a tape; broadcasters never would stand for the sacrifice in signal quality this requires.

I have both and to be honest, prefer HD DVD, but Blu-ray has more capacity and Sony threw a lot of money around to studios to go Blu-ray exclusive. Can't compete without titles, and Sony didn't want to lose again...

Blue Ray was backed by the porn industry and that was the final push I think.

Actually, I read that too in several places. It's true, the porn industry is very influential in technology. They started supporting HD-DVD but then switched sides.

BTW, that's also why people buy 1TB hard disks these days :)

Seriously, how many porn films do you or anybody in this forum have in high def? If I want to see naked girls I'd go to strip joint and that is definitely a High Definition in 3 Dimension and live viewing. :)

Don't get me wrong, I like women but to spent that much to see bad acting and repetitive action in HD? I have more satisfaction spending my $20 at the Movie Theater.

I think that the reason why porn industry make lots of money back then is because it was new and it's on that era where sex and alcohol is considered normal.

This is Digital age, so what drives the format is whatever you and you or your family members chose to play in front of your TV.
