I'm not sure if the problem is hardware or software, so I've posted here.
Mod, please move to the appropriate place...

So about 3 months ago, I shell out the cash for a Dell XPS 600. Get the computer and on the very first powerup, the thing hangs during boot with a flashing cursor on the upper left of the screen. I brush it off, restart eveyrthing and all is well and good.

Unfortunately, this problem is getting worse. Sometimes it takes 10+ restarts (still getting stuck on the flashing cursor) until it can properly boot up. Sometimes it's great. I've contacted Dell support several times over these past few months and they seem worthless. I've set the USB emulation to no boot (which they claimed would "definitely resolve the issue"), but no dice. (first 3 diagnostic lights are lit if that means anything to anyone).

I've also gotten the occasional BSOD for IRQL not less than or equal and previous attempts at booting have failed @ checkpoint Ithr, but the biggest problem by far is the boot one.

The last thing that support wanted me to do was reformat the HD because they believe that the OS is corrupted (WinXP). I really don't want to do this for two reasons (1) It's a pain in the ass getting everything back to normal on a newly wiped system and (2) they're probably wrong.

Anyone have any advice? Is there someone beyond dell support I should be complaining to? There should be a lemon law on these things...

It's not looking to boot to a floppy or bootable cd rom that you left in either one of those drives, is it ?

Is the first boot device the harddrive ?

When you order stuff through the mail, ( ups ), they get bounced around quite a bit. Did you try and make sure all the wires are firmly seated in their proper places ?

No disks in the drives. Yes boot from the hard drive and I tried to reseat everything as best I could to no avail... weird. They're sending someone out to replace the motherboard. This could be good- or it could be that my computer will explode in a few days. I am afraid. Very afraid. 8O

Update: So the tech that came through was unfortunately useless. In fact, the computer does not work at all now. Period. Nothing. My fears were correct. It has a-sploded.

I called dell to get the thing replaced and they're insisting on sending me a referb since the 90 days have passed. This is even though the problems started after 0 days (the first power on) and they've been *forcing* me to troubleshoot the darn thing myself.

Arg.

Hi,

This might not help you now, but it may help someone else out there. I've had a large batch of Optiplex GX620's that I've been working on. Some of the machines had flashing cursors when they tried to boot, and most of these would never do anything else than that. The problem (in my case at least) is with the memory modules installed - some of them may be faulty or incompatible. As soon as I removed the two sticks which I had been adding to the machines as I worked through them, then machine went straight to the splash screen and continued to boot. So my advise is check your memory!!
