Hey guys, I apologise in advance if I haven't managed to get this topic onto the right thread, I chose Digital / Satellite Tv as it seemed close enough, although my question does involve broadband also.
Basically, the problem I am having involves me growing tired of the absolutely horrendous service that I am currently recieving from Virgin from the 3 in 1 bundle that they provide. This includes Digital TV, phone and broadband. In fairness, for £30 a month it is reasonable value. The problem is, I am an avid gamer and also I stream a live internet radio station, which means I need a fast, low ms internet connection. This just isn't available with my current package, which runs reasonably well at off-peak times but suffers horribly during periods when a lot of people are using it (it is a cable-based connection.)
To solve the problem, and to also provide the digital TV and phone line that the rest of my family use, I have proposed the following solution. It seems the only option that is available, considering that if I want to provide digital TV through a BT phone line, I would also need to opt for BT broadband and this would appear to be a terrible idea.
The best idea would appear to be to stream the digital television through satellite, through the new service called 'Freesat', meaning I can pay the one-off installlation fee and then not have to cover any future charges for digital television (presuming I do not want to pay for additional content from Sky).
This would free up the phone line, so that it could be used by a company other than BT in respect to the broadband, as there would be no need for digital television to be provided through the phone line. This would mean instead of having to opt for a bundle, I could pay for a dedicated ADSL connection through my phone line, I expect through Be Broadband, meaning I will be able to rely on a much faster, consistent connection. We could then also pay for the phone through a default package with BT.
This seems to be the only solution available to me, unless I opt for another bundle option with BT or a bundle with another company, which would in turn also take charge of the phone line and my internet connection. It seems the only way to obtain a fast, dedicated internet line and still have digital television and a phone line available would be to route the services seperately and utilise satellite for the television.
Any feedback on this would be highly appreciated, because it would be a real disaster if we were to do this and it not to go smoothly. I am presuming we can still use the phone through an ADSL package on a BT phone line, and also that Freesat does not use the phone line whatsoever unless we are purchasing additional content through Sky, in which case it would need to be connected to the phone line (but this is not planned).
If this would work and provide me with the good internet connection I require (probably 8mbps or 24mbps and 1.3mbps upload) then I'd be a happy bunny. Can anyone see any possible problems with this? Or perhaps a better suggestion?
Thank you very very much for any feedback, figuring this solution out has already taken a considerable amount of time. Thanks guys
