My setup:
Windows 2000 PRO SP4
Asus a7v 333
AMD 2400+
512 DDR 2700 RAM

Just purchased a Lacie 160 GIG external USB2 hard drive from those lovely people at ebuyer, seems to be working fine, nice and fast, spacious etc, only pone probleme, trying to delete certain folders, or accessing certain files seems to result in my pc shutting down for no aparent reason and rebooting again. At first i assumed it was some kind of safty precaution, but against what, have i set it up wrong? All i did was plug it in and it installed its self.

any information appriciated!

Could be a power supply issue. If your PSU is undersized, it may be causing problems. What make and ratings are your current power supply??

XP2800+, Abit NF7, 1GB Dual-Channel DDR333, ATI R9800PRO 128MB, TT PurePower 420W, LG DVD+-R/RW

Doesn't an X800 need at least a 400watt psu? Your 5v rail is probably unable to supply enough juice and is causing the usb to tweak out. Upgrading the power supply is not a very expensive thing to do now days so that would be the best place to start :)
