use a switch, or a crossover cable.

Modern NICs don't need a crossover cable. Do a manual IP configuration on both computers, say 192.168.1.1 on one and 192.168.1.2 on the other, set the subnet mask to 255.255.255.0 on both and that's it. You can either do Windows file sharing at this point or run an FTP server on one and an FTP client on the other.

To be more specific, (most)gigabit NICs do auto switching, so can be connected directly. Older 10/100 NICS don't and would require the switch or crossover cable

You want to be sure both computers are in the same workgroup, just to make life with windows a tad bit easier
