use a switch, or a crossover cable.

Modern NICs don't need a crossover cable. Do a manual IP configuration on both computers, say on one and on the other, set the subnet mask to on both and that's it. You can either do Windows file sharing at this point or run an FTP server on one and an FTP client on the other.

To be more specific, (most)gigabit NICs do auto switching, so can be connected directly. Older 10/100 NICS don't and would require the switch or crossover cable
