Have large number of old vinyl lp's that I would like to copy over to pc.
Have a linear turntable from old stereo but the amp is questionable.
Any way to hook up turntable directly to P.C.
Yes I know that there are turntables available to-day that can do this but am not able to spend the dollars.
Would need detailed instructions as my savy is limited.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

If you can't afford a turntable that connects directly to the PC, about $100, then you're going have to run the turntable through the audio out of the amp to the audio in of your sound card using a splitter. Audacity is a free program that will do the recording. Unless you stop the recording after each song and start a new one for the next, it will record the entire album side as one file, which you'll later have to split into each song. Have messed with this little and it was a pain but might not be too bad with good software once you get the hang of it. Was using video editing software and can't really recommend software for this. While recording each song as a separate file would be easier, at least initially, you'll need the turntable within easy reach of the computer. Some audio recording programs claim they can create a new file for each song the ones I've seen look for silence for a period of time and have no idea how well they work. I would guess if the LPs are scratched they would work too well. This is the kind of project you'll have to play around with to see what works best for you.

as for software thre are a million options... audacity is a good free option.

as for getting the signal into ur comp, it will definately be possible. it would be better if you told me about the turntable and amp before i give you advice but i will give a rough guide.

since the turntable is old you will probably have to hook it up to your amp/pre-amp then hook up the "line out" from your amp to the pc . "line out" should be on th back of the amp/pre-amp and consist of 2 rca or phono connectors, if there is not a line out then you can use tape out or cd out or aux out... anything with out and 2 phono/rca connectors... try it (dont try the speaker out please!). you may have to use the headphone out if none of these outs exist.... "line out" is generally different from the output on ur turntable, especialy on older models. the connectors are often the same but the signal is different and can not picked up properly by a pc line input.

look at the connectors on the output you intend to use, look at the input on the computer and get a cable to connect the 2.

chances are you will need one of these but look at the connectors on the amp and soundcard before you buy

LOL, love you sarcasm.

As g-paw suggested, best is to get yourself an LP to PC unit like this one. http://www.ion-audio.com/ionttusb05xl It'll make your converting/editing easier. And it'll serve as a dual purpose, Now you can play LP music through your PC or Laptop.
