I’m about to buy a netbook, but after long research and reading reviews/forum threads I haven’t gotten any closer a final decision.
That’s why I’d like to know what YOU think about YOUR netbook, simply what netbook you have and what makes it good or bad, e.g. is there a couple of keys that are misplaces or does it have a surprisingly good monitor, etc.
1. Wanted an SSD, mainly for saving power, whether it actually does it or not,who knows. I also wasnt planning on carrying too many files with me anyway.
2. Wanted 9 inch, mainly because I do have smallish hands, and my previous laptop was a 17 incher,so I wanted something way smaller to carry around so I went to the extreme here
3. Chose the Dell because- I found it it was very easy to access the parts (like most Dells are),it was fanless, it didnt have that complicated Asus style dual SSD setup and it was cheaper (get a discount for flipping burgers for McDonalds)
before you figure out which one you want, answer these questions
HDD or SSD?
9 or 10 inch? (seriously,if you want a bigger one,just get a 13 inch laptop)
Cost?
The Diamondville or Z-Series of Atom CPUs?
To explain that last one,the Diamondville (or 'regular' Atom) comes with the GMA 950 GPU. Another difference is the RAM. In most cases (except for some Acer ones I do believe, which had 512 meg soldered and a SO-DIM which only took up to 1 gig sticks,so you were limited to 1.5 vs 2 gigs of most other netbooks),these Atoms are always paired with a SO-DIMM socket. However, in a lot of cases ,the Z-series (The Dell Mini 10 [non-v]) for example, has RAM soldered onto a daughter board and you cant upgrade it,and most of the time is limited to 1 gig of RAM. I have only looked at the Dell Z-series netbooks,I am unsure of other brands, but I could be wrong on the RAM slot issue. Otherwise, however, you can put a 2 gig RAM stick in any netbook with a SO-DIMM.
As far as the GMA 950 vs 500 is concerned, I am pretty sure (not for certain, seeing as ive never used a GMA 500 netbook) thats its basically Performance vs Battery Life, the 950 being the better performer. I know the GMA 950 can play older games and SD video, but from what ive read, the GMA 500 struggles more in this area. If you plan on just literally browsing the web and watching SD flash videos, than the 500 might be better for battery life, but the 950 should perform better.
Side Note- The Dell Mini 9 and Mini 10v with the GMA 950,are Hackintosh compatible.
