Is there a way to connect a laptop up to the computer which will then allow you to use the dvd drive from the desktop computer on the laptop?

If your notebook has a SATA interface drive, then yes, it's easy.

Otherwise, you have to invent the interface yourself, or use a USB-SATA interface.
