I can't enable virtual scrolling on my laptop Touchpad. The options are not
"grayed" out in the control panel device settings, but when I try to click on
the boxes, no check appears. The "Apply" button becomes active, too. Is
there another setting that I need to disable before virtual scrolling can be
enabled?

After sticking his head out from his XP firewall, rrsmith had this to say:

Have you installed the manufacturer's device driver for the touchpad on the
laptop?

Kiddies, don't forget to defrag your hard drive & update your virus
