A lot of TVs have both these days but sometimes your faced with this decision. I'm buying a cheap HDTV so I can't get 1080p. My TV will be used mostly for gaming(PS3). I really need some good advice cause I don't that much about HDs.

Im 99.9% sure ALL 720P Tvs display at 1080i. The manufacturer rates them by the P rating for some reason. I have a Vizio TV and on the box (and in the store on the sales tag) it says diplays in 720P but in the manual it says "Signal Compatibility: 480i (SDTV), 480P (EDTV), 720P (HDTV), 1080i (HDTV).

what's important is the screen resolution. it doesn't matter if your hdtv can display at 1080i if you've only got the resolution of 1280x720. if you want true hd quality, you have to get a high-resolution display. then make sure it will display at what you want.

You don't really have a choice as all currently available HDTVs are at least 720 progressive scan. The 1080i designation was for 1st gen TVs that only did 1080 interlaced or 540 progressive. Some displays are actually PC so they may have a slightly different resolution.
