Version 5.1.2600
I need to be logged into messenger to use remote assistance. When I
click on the messenger item it says 'click here to sign in as [email
address] I enter the password to sign in and it then says:
Windows Messenger
A newer version is available. You must install the newer version in
order to use this program. [OK]
I click on OK after closing down all running programs as requested.
Then it appears to copy some files - then nothing - I'm not logged in.
This will repeat (it still thinks it needs upgrading).
Nothing is running. I go to 'remote assistance' within help and click
on invite someone and it says you must be signed into messenger. I
type in the password and nothing runs again (it's still saying you must
log into messenger to use remote assistance). I'm using a
non-microsoft email account for this.
I have confirmed the email address by clicking on the link which was
sent to me.

try booting into safemode w/ networking. once in there connect to the
internet and go to:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads [...] laylang=en this will let you download the latest version of windows messenger.
once installed, reboot into normal mode and this should do the trick.
hope this helps!
