my camera when turned on says access...then a few moments later says memory stick error. when I try to format the memory stick tool it goes to memory stick error.when I exit the menu it is still flashing memory stick error. Is it possible that memory stick and or adaptor have gone bad

I would say that the memory stick is bad but you say you are using an adaptor. I'm assuming your useing one of the holders that allow you to use a small card in a bigger slot and if this is the case the problem might be the adaptor. some of them are notorious for not working right. Considering the cost of memory sticks lately (i recently picked up a 2 pack of 2 gig high speed cards for my wifes Olympus for 29 bucks) instead of using an adaptor just buy the right size memory stick you will have fewer issues with the camera recognizing the memory.
