i'm running an xbox 360 on my computer monitor through an HDMI to DVI cable. it suits my needs perfectly, but there's no sound. a bit of searching on the net revealed an HDMI splitter i might be able to use to separate the video and audio signals from the console, but thus far i've been unable to find a way to get my headphones to jive with HDMI input. is this even possible? if so, what would i need to pick up?

No it is not possible.

HDMI has two features that make this nearly impossible - it's digital, and its usually encrypted.

As its a digital signal, even if you extracted the audio (which would require some sort of decrypting on the fly high powered processor), you would still need a Digital to analogue converter. You could use a home theatre receiver for that, but that will set you back another $600

To prevent piracy (unlike back in the days, where you could dub VHS to DVD, and vice versa), HDMI is often encrypted/DRM protected, to stop you from simpyl extracting the signals.
