Cat 5 cable wires

I need to know which wires in a standered UTP Cat 5 cable carry signal and which carry power. Anyone know? Have a diagram? Know a site?

  2. Wow, Thanks a lot.. Your reply has identified a litle problem i've been having.... I only get 10MBS thru a lot of cable runs I crimp... From the spec you point to...

"If you split the + and - signals so that each on is part of a different pair, then the cable may seem to work at 10 megabits per second (10BASE-T) but not at 100 except for short lengths (under 5 meters)."

Wow, that got it... I've pulled an additional CAT5 thru my
phone conduit at home (for a very nice home network). WHile I was very carefull to match the colors at each end crip, I didnt match the +/- pairs - Result: I only get 10x transfer thru some runs!!!

I inspected and re crimpted a couple runs and I got 100X everywhere now!!!

From now on I'l match the more than just colors! but the +/- pairs too...

Ya fixed a problem that's been buggin me for a about a yr now!

    Thanks!
  3. Just love the fix...
I don't have to manually set some NIC's back to 10X...
All Auto Detect!!! (one less thing to do! allright!)
  4. Oh yeah. You've gotta follow the specs. Otherwise you're not getting the electrical characteristics of "twisted pair" Glad to be of some assistance.
