Astro Gaming A40 Audio System

This system comes with a headset and a mixamp for $250, I'm going to buy it soon but I have a few questions.

What does a mixamp do? I've read about it but I'm still not too sure what it does.

Also, would it be worth getting a sound card for my PC to go along with this, if so can you guys recommend any good price/performance sound cards?

I really like the Razer Barricuda. I have had creative before, but no high quality creative cards before. MSRP the Barricuda is like 150 bucks but I got mine for 60 on buy.com.

(I am getting the Sennheiser pc350, take a look at that. I almost got the A40, but liked this one better.)
