I'm looking for a laptop which suits my needs for my trip to school come september. I'll use the suggested format for making these kinds of posts from the sticky, to help speed things up...
1_What is your budget?
£400-450, though I will consider going up to £500 if it's the "perfect" laptop!
2_What is the size of the notebook that you are considering?
10"-15" preferred. 17" is just a bit too big to be carrying with me all day.
3_What screen resolution do you want?
Minimum of 720p, 1080p would be brilliant but I can understand if my budget doesn't quite stretch to that
4_Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop?
5_How much battery life do you need?
As much as possible, I'd like to remain untethered whilst at school. 6hrs+ would be amazing.
6_Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)?
7_What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, surfing the web, playing music, watching movies, Etc.)
Surfing the web and word processing, naturally. I would also like to be able to play back 720p (or even 1080p) video with this laptop.
8_How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need?
120gb+, no SSDs please! I have an external drive I use for movies and tv shows, so it doesn't need to be able to save all my files, just be able to fit a couple films or shows on it.
9_If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post the links to them.
Any reputable stores are fine (scan, overclockers, microdirect, ebuyer, etc.etc.).
10_How long do you want to keep your laptop?
Duration of the course, so 3-4 years. This wont be my main computer, so I wont be hankering for an upgrade after a couple of years.
11_If you would like to mention some other things about purchasing your ideal laptop, post them.
Obviously by the list of things I want to use the laptop for it's gonna have to have a dedicated graphics card. Dual core would be great. I can upgrade the ram at a later date to save money if necessary. HDMI out would be brilliant.
I noticed that the Dell 14z fits my requests but they don't sell them here in the UK (as of August '09, anyway..), which got me thinking that I wouldn't really need an internal CD/DVD drive as I have already ripped all my DVDs and music to my external drive.
If possible, I would like an OS-less laptop, or be able to get a rebate on the OS, since I have VLKs for both XP and Vista.
I would prefer a black laptop to a silver laptop, if possible
12_Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons.
Any brand is fine.
13_What country do you live in?
It seems that the problem with my search for a laptop that suits my needs is down to there being too much choice!
