I am looking to buy a new laptop before i go to university to study Engineering. My plan is to get the best laptop i can for less than $3000 and hope it will last me through university.

I was hoping i could get some suggestions on powerful multipurpose laptops

Here are two that i have found and am considering

Alienware M17x
HP DV7-2174CA Specs

I was also wondering if it was worth getting a cheap quadcore CPU or a stronger dual core?

Thankyou in advance

For engineering applications, a quad will be better. Also, you've posted some gaming machines - if you aren't gaming on them, I suggest you get a professional graphics card in your notebook rather than a consumer one. Engineering apps will be able to utilize them far better.
