After searching through the job adds, the usual:
No, I don't have 5 years experience
No, I don't have experience in the big three
No, I don't have 3 years UG experience
No, I don't have 3 years Catia experience
No, I don't have Pro E
Finally, I see a job! NO experience needed, PROFICIENCY in the engineering programs I know "desired", w00t!
Only STUDENTS accepted, it's a freaking internship. An internship that pays $13-$16 an hour depending on how much you know!
I've been out of school for 2 freaking years! I applied anyway. Told them I was going to attend a better school to better my degree (which I WAS accepted at), and needed a boost to get right with Financial Aid. I AM qualified, except for not being a current student.
Freaking people, it's the only job that doesn't require a specialty I don't know or gobs of experience, it's a big contract, and they only want current students.
But I'll fight for it!

Wow, you know, BS degree status IS a minority! And I definately surpass the minimum requirements for the job!
I don't think "graduate status" is written into those laws!

That's how it works Crash they bring in Students first at low pay and the company gets top notch employee's at low cost and the Students get experience.
There are a few obvious problems with that philosophy however.
(1) the low wages are a total slap in the face to the best of the best, and all the hard work in school they have put in plus the mundo amounts of debt that puts most people into. Wearing the ring does not mean earning the cash.
(2) That form of internship continues to be tolerated by big business as people in the trades think a new person should have to push a broom before they move ahead in life simply because they had to do it. Can't blame the corporations for that because it starts off in University and college in the form of frat houses and YOU are a Noob deal, so the students themselves propagate their own demise in regards to good paying jobs right out of school.
In 2002 I trained a girl in robotics operations at Nortel Networks fresh out of High school she was going to school in all her none working hours. She now has her engineering ring on her finger and she earned it but she still works in a lab on robotics not her choice of field but people are type cast into job rolls they cannot get out of simply because that is the experience they have.
I know so many people given a chance that could offer the world so much in invention and thought but they are hitting a glass roof over their head they cant get through. No amount of proper work ethic or amount of degree's on the wall will change it. The system in place limits creativeness' and promotes favouritism.
Sad as all that is....it is a hard fact of life.
Picture a Civil Engineer's first day on the job in his nice new white construction hat and shiny Kevlar construction boots with more BA's after his last name the Albert Einstein.
Imagine him standing fit and tall yet skinny and fresh of face trying to get 20 Hard Core construction workers with 800 years of experience behind them to walk under a massive steel bridge and start tasking to a job. They are going to without question tell the guy to stuff it up his ass because what he just told them to do would probably get everyone of them killed.
I do not believe in degree's earned in school are practical in all circumstances. Agreed in many aspects of sciences and development if you don't do the lab work now one else can and you are very much needed for your skills. In most cases the world is build by the Sergeants and the grunts and the tasks are completed by their knowledge and skills earned on the line and not by anything an Engineer learned in school it just appears that way.
I don't care about the low pay: Internships were NOT available when I was in school due to a sluggish economy in 2000-2002. That's right, even before the election the economy was sluggish. News agents, for their love of Clinton, just downplayed it until after Bush took office.
Fresh shiny mechanical designers are worth around 28k. 32k if they work for a major player in a large expensive city, 24k if they work for a local small manufacturing firm. So "intern pay" is completely acceptable at those rates.
It's just getting the job, or any job that gives me some experience, that's become my problem.
And because of my broad background and education I can work most entry level non-administrative jobs the Big 3 provides. That is, when they provide them.
And it doesn't even take a lot to make me happy. I'd be as happy as a technician in development and testing as I would be designing cylinder heads, so long as the job graduated to a position with some athority over design decisions.

Things are not good anywhere Crash I work for a big company and I had to take a week off, in fact I took half of last Friday off and wont go back until next Monday simply because we ran out of a very special component in Optical hardware.
It takes 13 weeks to grow them and they fuccked up the batch....................Ya big problem,,,,,,,,Now what....?
I have some Vacation time forced that is for sure.
I once walked into a place fresh from school and told the Gentlemen I will work for 1 week free just so you can see what I got. That meant if he hired me at the end of the week without pay I see or got no Bling! for 3 weeks possibly 4.
The guy hired me 3 days into the job and I never looked back. Well that was a great story and it is true but now a days a man cant offer anyone a deal like that there is to much red tape involved.
In the old West you could have given a ranch owner your horse for room and board for a year and earned straight pay for your duties. Men and Woman don't have the option to swagger anymore with talent they have to know someone to get work.
My only suggestion and it's not a very good one is to pay a hiring agency I figure 400 to 800 Bucks U.S to find you a job.
The employees that work those firms Golf with the owners of the Big three and know them by first names. That is stretching it a little bit but they have the contacts that can place you in a job your detailed for.
Do not accept the little [-peep-] Crash you need to start large to be large taking the interim job just to pay bills gets you a life time of heart ache you need to come in dressed in Dockers a clean shirt and dress shoe's. If you don't your going to slum for the rest of your life.
After you got the job nailed you can walk into work in Blue Jeans on Fridays if you want. Just like all the successful Techy's do.
Or if I learned spanish, I could move to Latin American where being white, speaking English and having ANY technical knowledge gets you a management position and a big fat $18k-24k/yr salary, which is like $40k-60k here.

Cypress is a real hot spot no pun intended and for a few other reasons I want to retire there.
(1) The entire police force in Cypress since the end of WWII is all Canadian Soldiers.
(2) I got a hill all picked out 500 feet above sea level with beach access down a nice sandy and cobbled path that I am going to build a house on.
(3) Bonus round I am greatly in to History and archaeology and some nut case scientist just announced about 2 weeks ago he found the lost city of Atlantis 1.5 Miles deep just off the coast of Cypress and under about 35 feet of sediment but they used ground penetrating radar and acoustic sonar to define roadways walls and buildings.
Ya that would be one hell of a nice spot to sit back and relax.
