Cannot Update Drivers in XP to Recommended 5.1.2600 Baseline

I'm running XP Home Edition w/ SP2 and all current patches recommended by
Windows Update on an off-brand laptop which periodically spontaneously
reboots. Problem has been going on for months and typicaly happens once or
twice a day. Certain events (like trying to run a backup to my external USB
backup drive) consistently trigger the problem. (I don't think it's an
overheating problem. I've installed a temp monitoring program and I'm using a
cooling stand.)

After the machine restarts, I get a SYSTEM HAS RECOVERED FROM A SERIOUS
ERROR message. Among the info that has been gathered (and which I've been
passing on to MS) is a reference to PRODUCT: 768_1.

Searching that in the KB brought me to KB article 316424, which gives
procedures for determining the version of drivers and for updating the MS
drivers to v. 5.1.2600.0 or better.

About 10 of the MS drivers listed via the property sheets of items in Device
Manager are pre-5.1.2600.0. I've followed the instructions in KB316424, but
when I try to use the DRIVER UPDATE feature to search for a better driver and
specifically tell it to look at the install CD (that's what the KB article
says to do), I'm consistently advised that no better drivers can be found
than the ones which are already installed.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I would do a couple of things. First check the vendor's website and look
at the BIOS Firmware history file. Examine the file for any patches that
address system stability issues. If your system BIOS is say 3-4 revisions
down, you might consider a BIOS Firmware flash update.
If your laptop vendor has a customer forum, check that for users who
have had similar issue(s)/problem(s).
Also, many of the system level drivers are provided by the Chipset driver
package (Intel, VIA, SiS or nVidia). You may need to download and
install Everest Home Edition to do a hardware inventory and found out
which Chipset your Motherboard is based on.
Latest version of Everest found here:
http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3
Finally, you may have a defective or marginal unit - have you been working
the vendor's Tech support to resolve/document your problems?

Hi

The drivers could be specific to the Laptop. Have you contacted the your
Laptop supplier for any possible solutions?
