Can you help me decide between the two laptops please

HP HDX 16
Core 2 P7350
16 inch 1080p ,
512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT
4 GB RAM
320 GB (7200 RPM)
Bluray Rom

ASUS G51VX
Core 2 P7350
15.6 inch 1366 x768 LED
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260M (1 GB)
320 GB (7200 RPM)

I will be mainly doing software development (RAM intensive) and video encoding.

How much RAM does the ASUS model have? if it's 4GB then u are not going to see a difference between them,because the main difference is VGA and that's important if u want to game

ASUS has 4gb as well but I am not going to play games.
its mainly for for video encoding and sofware development.

What about build quality and support?

If not gaming then save some $ and go for HP HDX 16,build quality of both laptops are good

I think the HP model is cheaper due to lower graphic card.
