Forum Tom's Guide : Tell Us PC vs. Laptop for HD Editing

Hello,

Getting ready to purchase a new PC or a Laptop that will double as my system I will use for HD Video editing on the side. I am getting into HD video with my recent purchase of a Canon HD Vcam (HF S10). Any thoughts on staying away from a Laptop for this? I would like the flexibility of taking my computer in the field but don't want to invest in something that really isn't the right tool for the job. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

A laptop would work, you need to make sure you get the fastests and yet largest drive you can find, and make sure you have a large format one to get the best heat and expandability options.

A desktop would realy be ideal, you will have way more options for add-in cards like dedicated video encoders/decoders, much larger drive selection, probably more reliability due to it not moving around as much. #1 thing for video editing is CPU speed, then RAM, then hard drive speed. But if one lags behind the other, like a 8-core CPU with 1gig of RAM, you will end up slow. You need at least 4 gig of RAM for good video editing, fastest CPU you can afford, and then the fastests hard drive. Samsung Spoinpoint should do well, they are fast and have high capacity. SSD is probably too small for working with HD Video, unless you have 1k to spend on a drive.

PC is always faster and better than laptops for the same price. Especially when doing hardcore HD editing.
