I'm having this problem on my portable IBM Thinkpad R51. Its running Windows XP Home SP2.
Its never had this problem before. Windows recognizes that I connect a USB Device. And I can find the harddisk just fine in the systemtray. But I cannot access the drive. Its a 160GB drive. The USB port detect my 2GB flashdrive just fine.
I figured it out. I have a network drive mapped with the same drive letter as this external harddisk was. I though the assigning of drive letters happened automaticly, but there you go...problem solved.
go to control panel -> administrative tools -> computer management -> storage -> disk management.
you probably have a drive (located on the bottom right) that is listed with no drive letter, just assign it a drive letter and see if it comes back, if not, the drive is probably not initializing and you might have to either format it or replace it.
Hope this will help....
