The computer keeps getting stuck at the XP screen and does not go anywhere.
If i do the recovery disk that came with the laptop, will i lose all my files
if i have it go back to factory settings, or will it just over write windows
files and my miles will still be there? If this will not work, how else can i
get to my files to get them off the computer so i can have them? This is a
laptop running XP home with SP2

Doing a repair or restore should not delete any of you saved info try this
first. Go start, run, type:cmd In cmd type:CHKDSK C: /R Agree to
restart,then type:EXIT
You can also type:CHKDSK /? For available cmds

How do you know what kind of "recovery disk" the OP got with their
laptop?

Most RECOVERY DISKS rewrite over everything in the boot partition. Only
with a true reinstall XP CD can you do a non-destructive repair, and
sometimes that screws up.

To the OP: Back up ANYTHING that you don't want to loose. If you don't
know how, then you should take your laptop to a professional.

The OP can't get into WIndows to get to the Start button. Try reading
and understanding a person's post before responding.
