this may be a stupid question but do i need to update the drivers for my actual laptop (ex. mouse, monitor, modem etc.) before i put on a new os (vista) or will it be ok? Or can i do it after? I have downloaded the latest version of firefox already will that be compatible with vista by itself? thanks so much in advance for any/all help!

You won't be able to install the new drivers until you have installed the new OS. Best thing is to download them before hand and keep them on a flash drive or something (I'm assuming that you're doing a clean install?), particularly if this is the only computer with which you'll have access to the internet (your networking cards probably need updated drivers).

I wouldn't upgrade to Vista. In another few months, Vista will be outdated. Wait and get a copy of Windows 7.
