hi all,
i am curently using a 40Gb WD caviar hdd set on master on primary IDE, and both secondary IDE "slots" are taken by optical storage devices.
my mobo, asus A7V266 doesnt have any sata controler so IDE is my only choice.
i would like to buy a new 160gb ATA/100 hdd and set it up on the primary IDE WITH the old hdd.

would that be a dramatic speed loss.
my mobo supports udma100, i have 80conduct ide cables, but im not sure on the old hdd's speed. it is probably 100 right ? i have two questions :

1- is it a good idea to install that 160 hdd on ide or should i wait for my next mobo and buy sata..

2- does my mobo support 160gb hdds ? ive flashed the bios not long ago so there shouldnt be any problems right ?

thx for helpin me newbie -_-

1) You would only really run into speed reduction when copying files from one disk to the other. If you plan on doing lots of disk to disk transfers you could adjust your cables to have one optical drive and one hd on each cable.
2) You mobo should have no problem with a 160gb hd.

Diamondmax 9 has up to 8mb of cache, a max size of 250gb and a latency of <9.2
Diamondmax 10 has up to 16mb of cache, a max size of 300gb, and a latency of <9.0.
The more cache the faster the hard drive, it is a noticable difference. The 16mb cache versions only come in 250 and 300gb. 8mb cache diamondmax 10 drives are 80 to 200gb.
Pretty much all newer 7200rpm drives are going to be the same noise wise. It really isn't that bad at all. I have 4 120gb maxtor drives (raid5) in my file server and I can barely hear them.
