Are there any fanless IDE harddrives? There are such external USB drives, but whatabout regular ones?

To some, the fact that HDs have fans might seem weird.. I just found out myself after replacing all other fans with water+aluminum cooling equipment...

Uh... I don't think any hard drives have fans on them...

Could you give an example of this? Like a picture or something?

Yeah they sell them at specialty store's along with fanless mice and keyboards. :)

But seriously some PC cases put a fan near the hard drive, most don't.

My case features a removeable hard drive cage with four 7200 RPM drives and on 10k RPM drive with less than 1/8" between them.

My case has two 80mm fans blowing on them, but when one of them got noisly I disconnected both for a month and had no heat related problems.

What? And to think my hands could have been saved from the endless cuts and bleeding when my hand hit my keyboard fan whilst typing!

Modern technology eh? What will they think of next...fanless mouse pads?

OK; so it's not a fan, but what about getting rid of that jet-like noice (whatever the cause). There are some drives with some liquid thing.. Will they reduce it (jet) or will they just limit the pleasant rattle of read/write?

Thats the drive's motor.

All hard drives make some noise when spinning, some more than others.

Chances are the noises your drive makes are normal, however if it also vibrates excessively then it probably has a bad motor.

If you want to pick a quiet drive its best to look at the benchmarks rather than the technology.

http://www.storagereview.com/php/benchmark/bench_sort.php

Select Idle noise and see how the various drives actually compare.

What hard drive(s) do you have? Not even an Atlas 10k III (1.5" tall one) scsi drive sounds like a jet, it just shakes the desk when you access it :)

I had a WD1000 with a bad motor. It became very loud, could "walk" across my desk due to vibrations and would overheat if left in a mobile rack enclosure.

WD advanced replace it with a nice 120.
