XP won't open smartmedia etc...?

Hi,
Running xp pro on a fairly new system. When i plug-in
a card reader, my camera any usb device it show's up
in device manager with no problems but windows will not
open it and it is not shown in my computer.
All my software & drivers are up to date and i am the
only one using this machine. Spyware & Virus up to
date...

Any suggestions?
