Ok folks, need some opinions here from experienced OCers. which of these DIMMS has better OC potential?

I am planning on running amd winchester 3200 on DFI Lan party UT NF4 Ultra-D mainboard with Forton Blue Storm 500watt PSU and Sapphire radeon x850xt pci-e gpu. Thanks for the incoming advice

Interesting, I had been favoring the patrior modules, but something about those OCZs looked nice. I'm new to OCn, so you can be sure I will be asking for help when I do get this rig going

AnandTech did a review of your mobo that may be worth reading. They set an OC record (for them) using OCZ PC3200 EL Platinum Rev. 2 (Samsung TCCD Memory Chips).
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2337" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2337</A>

It costs a bit more though. New Egg had it this morning but is out now. <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-890&depa=1" target="_new">http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-890&depa=1</A>

Well unfortuneatly I've pushed my budget on this thing to the limit (maybe a lil beyond  ). If <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-890&depa=1" target="_new"> this </A> is the module anandtech tested, hopefully <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproductdesc.asp?DEPA=0&description=20-227-204&CMP=OTC-pr1c3watch&ATT=System+Memory" target="_new"> this </A> will perform somewhere near as well, although I can't afford that 4000+ cpu; I have to go with the 3200+ winchester instead. Combined with a sapphire ati x850xt (non plat ed), I should be looking pretty good. We'll just have to wait and see. **sigh** Why didn't I have my tax return direct deposited? :frown:

Take a long hard look at a Celeron "D" chip rig. At least you'll be sure of what you DON'T want.

Abit IS7 - 3.0C @ 3.6ghz - Mushkin PC4000 (2 X 512) - Sapphire 9800Pro - TT 420 watt Pure Power
Samsung 120gb ATA-100 - Maxtor 40gb ATA - 100
Sony DRU-510A - Yellowtail Merlot

Instead of the OCZ 3200 Gold VX you may want to look at <A HREF="http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=20-146-843&depa=1" target="_new">OCZ 3700 Gold Edition Rev3</A> which is a bit cheaper. This <A HREF="http://www.sharkyextreme.com/hardware/article.php/3481836" target="_new">Review</A> indicates that the gold may give the best OC while the platinum gives the lowest memory timings.

Quoting from the review "This area is also split, with many buyers wanting the absolute lowest memory timings money can buy, while the other end needing the best in overclocking memory, in order to hit the very highest in CPU speeds."

Don't know if this helps or just confuses things further.

That sounds like a serious gamble to me, what's the best and worse case scenario if I buy this stuff?

I only have the 2x256 module of the XBL's but I see nothing wrong with them.

I'm just a newbie, but what do you mean by "shocking stuff for Athlon64"?

To quote the review I linked to above: "We proceeded to work the PC3700 Gold Rev 3 DDR over 500 MHz, and finally topped out at the 500-520 MHz range (depending on platform) and amazingly stuck to the 2.5-3-3-8 timings. This was true on both the AMD and Intel platforms, and the OCZ PC3700 Gold is a great bet for either one. This is an exceptional result for memory rated at only 466 MHz, especially since it can maintain the same memory timings throughout the range of overclocked speeds. The ease at which the overclocks were attained was also quite surprising, and OCZ receives top marks in this area."

I just don't know if I have the balls to risk getting bad RAM or something. I'd rather pay more and be assured of what I'm getting than gamble and get something that is inferior to what I wanted :frown:

Yeah, I know. I've stretched my budget out to the max with the system I want to build, but it should be good for some time

now have my 2x256 PDP XBL at 310 2.5,4,4,7

seems the longer I burn it in the tighter and faster it will go.

Gonna try for the 320-325 range today.

well I didn't get higher but tightened it down to 2.5,4,3,7.

Should be able to get 2.5,4,3,6.

debating on whether to try 2.5,5,5,... and see what she'll do.

Usually anything above 2.7ghz needs +.25v on the core at least, and that's getting into heating issues.

I imagine someone already threw this in here...but..this was a really good article for me in regards to memory for 64s.
<A HREF="http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2226" target="_new">http://www.anandtech.com/memory/showdoc.aspx?i=2226</A>

Current machines running F@H:
Athlons: [64 3500+][64 3000+][2500+][2000+][1.3x1][366]
Pentiums: [X 3.0][P4 2.4x5][P4 1.4]

It's not worth saying unless it takes a really long time to say!

Interesting reading. So <A HREF="http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_el_ddr_pc_3700_dual_channel_gold_rev_3" target="_new"> This </A> is the RAM they used in that anandtech review. It's a bit less expensive then <A HREF="http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/memory/ocz_el_ddr_pc_3200_dual_channel_gold_vx" target="_new"> This </A> that I was planning on buying, but which one will OC better? I would think the one I was going to buy would be better, and its only like $20 more, but what do you guys think?
