I'm looking to replace an aging Viewsonic P95f+ with a new 22 or 24" LCD. I've done a lot of research but I'm in very poor health, so I can only get so far with it. If you can give me a hand I'd appreciate it. I've never owned an LCD monitor, but I have a 26" LCD TV that could be used as a reference (link: http://www.maxentusa.com/_coreModu [...] asterID=15). I am a web designer (occasionally print) when I'm able and also enjoy gaming, though the most I head into the FPS area is with Warcraft arena pvp matches or the upcoming Starcraft 2.

  • How is a decent LCD ($400-600, say) likely to match up to my current monitor? It's all fine and good to read reviews, but yet another to have that sort of comparison.
  • Is input lag likely to be an issue for a game like WoW as opposed to something in the first person shooter genre? I'm particularly looking at the Dell 2408WFP, which seems to be the latest mid-level option. I hear it can be laggy but I have no actual experience with that sort of lag, so I don't know what to expect?
  • Am I better served getting a good quality 22" monitor for a similar price for all purposes, or is that impossible with the influx of the TN panels?
  • Is the color on a TN really as poor as I've read? Some seem to suggest that sitting right in front of one results in seeing different hues at the top, bottom, or sides than in the middle, but this seems extreme.
  • Do most of these monitors buzz? I am very sound sensitive and want to avoid this if at all possible.

I'm trying to find a good multipurpose monitor that can serve my needs for a long time, but it's so challenging to find something that doesn't appear to have major drawbacks. I'd love some answers to my questions and general advice.

Thanks for your time.

First off the price of decent panels has gone up recently, it's around $600 to $700 for a non-TN panel.

Input lag won't be an issue for Wow, you'll only notice it in the mouse cursor if you notice it at all.

There are a handful of non-TN 22" panels and non-TN 24" panels are drying up.

The color on TN panels isn't so bad, they would be bad for print art, but okay for web design, in fact it might be good to have the lowest common denominator when doing web design. The biggest drawback will be viewing angles.

I'd suggest looking at a 26" ips panel like the planar px2611w or the doublesight ds-263n. The only drawback with ips is that the blacks aren't quite as deep as on a va monitor like the dell.

Thanks for your insights.

I wasn't looking at 26" screens because I assumed the cost/quality ratio would change the higher up the chain I wanted to go. On top of that I'm only about 2 feet away from my screen, and that can't change without finding a new desk. Wouldn't a 26" screen from that distance be a bit much to handle?

Is the ds-263n a better quality monitor than the Dell I mentioned?

Any more thoughts?

You act like all dell monitors are bad... Its just the 3007.. So if you still want a good monitor just get the 3008. And I guess people go into research before they buy a big 30" like that.

It seems like the smaller versions are fine too.
