I have temporarily lost my cable service for the next month or so. Is it possible to watch any TV without cable, such as the local stations like in the old days?

You'll need (1) an ATSC tuner, either built-in to your HDTV or as an add-on box that you can connect to any TV, (2) some sort of UHF antenna, either amplified indoor if you live close enough to the broadcast tower, or a roof-top external one if you don't live that close.
