I just purchased the acer x163w monitor to attach to my averatec 6235 series laptop because the backlight has died. When I got it connected and turned them on, it shows the bootup screen but once the desktop starts to load the monitor immediately goes into standby. Any ideas why or how to resolve the issue?

You may have to enable output to the monitor - your notebook still thinks your LCD is working correctly (which, technically, it is). Usually it's a function+function key, like Fn + F5.
