XP likes to look an extra level in Win Explorer?

I vaguelyt recall that when Windows Explorer opens a folder of the
folder tree (left hand pane) then it likes to look at the files and
folders which are at an extra level further down.

I think this can lead to a wait before the folder tree gets
displayed.

Can anyone point me to where this is discussed or perhaps give me any
info on this. Thank you.
