Just got my new computer in yesterday, a 2.4ghz P4. I decided to get it sans OS and save myself $80. So I partition and format the drives and go to install windows 98 from an old disk I had. It got most of the way through before it ran into this error: "While initializing device NDIS: Windows protection error".
So I did a little searching online and found out this is caused by a problem in NDIS.VXD. Seems that Win 98 will not install on a computer with a CPU faster than 2.1ghz. Microsoft has a fix available, but the new version of NDIS.VXD is not available for public download. They want me to call MS (not toll free) and beg for assistance. Can anyone tell me where I can download the file or give me any other assistance?
I'm itching to get this new machine up and running so I can get off of this 4 year old PII.
Well looks like I cleared up the problem on my own. One of my buddies on IRC was able to dig up a new enough version of NDIS.vxd on his hard drive and send it over to me.
I searched my tail off, but I couldn't find the 4.10.0.2000 version of the file.
I think you'll either need to call MS, underclock the processor, or upgrade the operating system. Considering the speed of the new computer, I think an upgrade to WinXP might be a better idea than installing Win98. But that's just my personal opinion.
here is the link to the article, if somone could help me get this file I'd appreciate it. I can't even upgrade to WinXP cause it says I am out of memory. So much for getting my system installed today
