What would be the best ram to use with amd64 3500?
What is registered/unregistered ram?
What is dual channel ram?

Finally, is it possible to have 8gb of ram?

Dual channel RAM combines two (or 4) modules that send 64bits per clock cycle into a single channel that sends 128bits per clock cycle thus doubling the potencil max mem bandwidth from 3200MB/sec to 6400MB/sec (thats with PC3200). Dual channel only works on socket 939 Athlon64s, Thats what the extra pins are for compared to socket 754.

NOTE: even though d/c effectivly doubles the bandwidth, it DOES NOT double performance...not by a long shot.

An AMD dual channel rig will likely see a 3-5% increase in performance.

An Intel rig on the other hand...

- PDP PC3200 XBL and Crucial Ballistix would be great choices. PDP PC3200 LL would be a great price/performance choice if sure not going to overclock.

- Wouldn't want to use the registered memory with socket 939 - use unbuffered.

- If 2GB unbuffered memory modules not currently available on the market, 8GB wouldn't be an attainable goal with socket 939 motherboards, which AFAIK have 4 memory slots max.

- Some memory basics. Registered memory is slower than unbuffered but registered would allow for very heavy/stressful load memory config (e.g. 8 memory modules on a single opteron).

- Dual-channel is a property of chipsets/memory controllers and not a property of memory modules. May come across memory modules packaged together in pairs as a kit which the manufacturer targets at systems that support dual-channel - can be convenient.

OCZ released good value/dollar product (OCZ4001024VDC-KW) but limited availability (maybe arrive at places like newegg and others later) and looking for more feedback. And not sure if BIOS setting changes needed to put them more on par with the memory modules i mentioned above.
