VHS to DVD

I am having trouble copying my old vhs movies to dvd. I am trying to use a set top box that dubs from vhs to dvd but it tells me that the video is copy protected and I cant copy. I purchased these tapes legitamately how do I make a dvd copy for viewing?

Does the DVD recorder have a SCART socket or other external input. Connect a VHS player to the recorder and see if that works.
