Alright, for those of you who know more about sound than I do...
What file format supports 5.1 sound? I mean I know that .wav and .mp3 will play on 5.1 speakers, but what format really takes advantage of a 5.1 setup? Does my question make sense, lol?
there's actually a surprising amount of DVD Audio disks out there. not enough to replace anything in your existing collection, but there are still enough that you might find a few that you like. Best Buy is stocking them now, as well as many online stores. DVD Audio is encoded in Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP), which can output in 5.1 at 96kHz/24-bit, or Stereo at 192kHz/24-bit.
Windows Media Player 9 and later content can also be in 5.1, as well as WMV-HD, which has HD video as well as 5.1 audio. i've seen it at a few stores, and i have to admit its pretty stunning.
