Just noticed a small battery (like a CMOS battery) on a relatively new WD 1200 HDD.

Never seen that b4 (checked some of my other, older HDDs, none have it). Google was no help. Saw an old post by stinkfinger, but not sure its the same thing.

What does this do? Some new feature? It's on the underside of the case and looks to be located at the hub of the platters.

Since its new, what kind of new problems can be caused if its low or dead?

The HDD in question is used for office/critical backups, otherwise I'd remove the ah heck and see what happens.

Thanks,

Coyote.

OK, <A HREF="http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Coyote/Mvc-001s.jpg" target="_new">http://pics.bbzzdd.com/users/Coyote/Mvc-001s.jpg</A>

Damn, please cut & paste. For some reason the link doesn't work here

BTW, the guy I borrowed the camera from, a jeweler, said said 'Yeah, thats a watch battery". He may not know what a HDD is, but he damn sure knows what watch batteries look like.

The battery is where I believe, the hub of the platters are. The little latch/tab for removal is at 12 O'clock high on the (what appears to be) battery.

I guess it sort of looks like a watch battery but I assure you it is not. That is just the underside of the motor.
