Updates and System Restore

I loaded new updates on 7/13/05 and my system has not been the same. All of
my icons on my desktop as well as all of my documents/folders have turned
almost into HTML links (they're all underlined and all I have to do is click
once and they open). My scroll pad stopped working and only works
sporadically. There's plenty of other things that just aren't right!

Ideally I would like to delete the upgrade. Is there a way to do that?

I've tried to do a System Restore. I've tried to restore to a number of
different dates - from a day or two back to 2 weeks, to a month. I always
get an error that says "Restoration Incomplete. No changes have been made to
your system." I've tried a restore in both Normal mode and Safe mode with
the same results. I've checked the disk space available and have plenty.
I've also made sure that 12% of the resources were allocated to System
Restore.

I'm at an impasse. I really don't want to have to restore XP from my disks
if it can be avoided in any way! Any advice, help, insight will be
appreciated!

if the update was Service pack 2:

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;875350

after removing SP2 (if it was installed), then try a system restore, if the
"restoration incomplete" message is produced....

Try:
How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from
starting

since you can start windows XP you could try to start at PART 2. This
procedure is basically a manual system restore. but be very careful

for future reference, disable antivirus, antispyware realtime protection
during windows updates.

Hi Mary,

You can change the single click action to double again. Click on tools>folder options in any
explorer window. On the general tab, select "Double click to open an item". OK your way out.

If your touch pad stopped working properly, you might want to check the settings of the touch pad.
These settings vary from computer to computer, hence you might want to check the manuals of your
computer on ways to access these settings.

Regarding your system restore problem, check the following KB article:

How to troubleshoot the System Restore tool in Windows XP

Hope this helps.
