Will retsoring MBR damage the partitions/files?

Hi,

I have XP and in Explore all info has disappeared from the first partition of a drive and it asks to format it. It does have a drive letter but the name of the drive has gone and I can't access it.

In Computer Mgmt is says it is healthy but lists no FAT or NTFS.

It has been suggested I put the MBR back on but before I do, I don't want to damage any of the files that may be there still.

I have Partition Magic but not sure what the figures mean.

Any help?

Thanks

John

>It has been suggested I put the MBR back on

What suggested this? It certainly sounds like your Partition Table has been erased. Are you using Partition Magic to try and restore the Partition? If so you should recognize the size of the partitions and their names before you rewrite the Parition Table.

In answer to your question you can't destroy data by overwriting the MBR.
