Direct tv hd dvr reciever issues

i am having issues with my box, i think its a config issue but im not sure, my reciever says searching for signal in 2, but never does anything, i have a reciever that has 2 connection to recieve multi signals, but i have just one cable for one signal, my girlfriends mom had this issue and the directv man had to reset it, well ive tried to reset it, unplug it, but still same thing and no signal, my dish and connections and wires seem fine, so i have no clue what else to do, and im trying to avoid a service call charge, please if there is any help you or anyone can give it would be greatly appreciated, thank you
