also check out <A HREF="http://www.blkviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm" target="_new"><font color=red>blkvipers</font color=red></A> page on disabling some unnecessary services.

Good advice from everyone!

In addition ...

1.) Use a tool like <A HREF="http://mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml" target="_new">Startup Control Panel</A> to remove unnecessary items from loading with Windows.

2.) Install a good defragmentation program like <A HREF="http://www.execsoft.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp?ad=w2kol2" target="_new">Diskeeper</A> or <A HREF="http://www.oosoft.de/english/products/oodefragv4/" target="_new">O&O Defrag V4</A>, and run it regularly.

3.) Turn off the Task Scheduling Service, clean the out the Windows\Prefetch folder, and then re-enable the Task Scheduler. Afterwards, open each frequently used program several times, and reboot at least once a day for the next three days, during which time Windows prefetching will rearrange the files (including the boot files) on the system partition for faster loading. (This is called layout optimization, FYI.) Then disable the Task Scheduling Service again.

4.) Update all the drivers for the system to the newest versions. Do the same for any programs that are loading with Windows.

5.) Turn off the <A HREF="http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,3973,12200,00.asp" target="_new">eye candy</A>.

6.) Use a program like <A HREF="http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp" target="_new">TweakUI</A> and <A HREF="http://www.totalidea.de/tweakxp.htm" target="_new">Tweak-XP</A> to customize the system.

7.) Turn off <A HREF="http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm" target="_new">System Restore</A> for faster performance (although I don't recommend this, as the utility can be very handy at times.)

8.) Flash the mainboard BIOS to the latest version, and load the optimized defaults.

That's my contribution.
