PalmSource targets smart phones with new OS
PalmSource is going after the growing smart phone market, launching an OS
optimized for these handhelds called Cobalt 6.1. The move marks a change in
strategy for the firm, which had previously targeted the Palm OS at
handhelds, requiring handset makers to readjust the OS for use in phones.
The company said its smart phone OS will hit the market next year.
PalmSource's move was likely triggered by the popularity of PalmOne's Treo
600 smart phone, which has rapidly emerged as one of the most successful
smart phones to date. Symbian is the current leader in the smart phone OS
market, claiming 66 percent of the smart phone market.
