When first starting Windows, I am getting a message window that states "DVD
Check - Firmware availble for download - do you want to download the file".
It has no company or url infomation. All my drives are up-to-date. Where did
this message come from and how do I get rid of it. I have Norton active and
am running MS AntiSpyware, but they seem to have no effect.

Start by using the System Configuration to see if you can identify the
item that is starting with Windows:

Go to Start>Run and type (without quotes) "msconfig" [enter]. This
brings up the System Configuration Utility. Look on the Startup tab and
find the probable culprit. Uncheck the box next to its name, Apply and
OK out. You don't need to restart immediately, but the next time you do
you'll get a dialog saying you've used the Utility. Just tick the box
that says in effect, "don't bother me about this again".

That fixed it - thanks much. Turned out to be a Hewlett-Packard Drive
program loading at start-up. That MSconfig utility is so handy, it should be
part of the Windows Control Panel.

Oh, super! I'm really glad you solved it. Thanks for taking the time to
let us know the solution.

As noted, MSConfig is for troubleshooting. Not fixing the problem. You
need to remove the source of the problem after re-enabling the errant entry
in msconfig again.
Or, just ignore the message. Don't update firmware unless you have a major
problem with the DVD writer that the firmware update will fix.
