Buying laptops in Ireland

Hi,

I am living in Co Tipperary, Ireland.
I have two children whom have just started college this year. One is going to Waterford & the other going to Cork.
They both need laptops, I have been told that they will only really need it for word processing for assignments / emailing etc.
I know very little on laptops but am currently doing some research.
Can anyone advice a particular brand / model / spec that would be suitable?
My budget is quite tight, howver I am prepared to borrow if need be to purchase the right laptop for them.
All advice & ideas most welcome.
