I need to replace the hard drive in a laptop. When I goto the the manufactures site it says that the hard drive interface is ATA 5. Most of the replacements that I have found are ATA 6. Is ATA 6 backward compatible with ATA 5??

ATA is ATA. The number just represents the speed it goes at. An ata6 drive will work on an ata5 controller, it will just be slowed down to that speed.

ATA5 is UDMA 100. ATA6 is UDMA 133. All the "speeds" are compatable with each other, and drives are still so slow that most can't exceed UDMA 66 transfer rates.
